We help detect nerve and muscle problems

Diagnostic testing with electromyography and nerve conduction studies

We help detect nerve and muscle problems. This is done using tests commonly called electromyography and nerve conduction studies (EMG & NCS), also known as electrodiagnostics.

We are a fully accredited facility for neurodiagnostics. We undergo a comprehensive assessment prior to being awarded accreditation by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia. Accreditation provides recognition that our clinic meets provincial standards of quality and helps us continuously improve the quality of services provided.

The cost for most of our services are covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP) in British Columbia or other provincial health care plans in Canada as long as you have been referred to our clinic by a physician. Speak to your family doctor to request a referral.

What are electromyography and nerve conduction studies?

Electromyography and nerve conduction studies are office based tests to check the health of your nerves and muscles. A small electrical impulse will be sent through your nerves and muscles. The test will measure the electrical activity when you are at rest and when you use the muscle.

Why is electromyography performed?

EMG is usually done if you have the following symptoms which your doctor thinks might be nerve or muscle related:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Burning
  • Weakness
  • Abnormal movements

The results from an EMG can help determine the cause and severity of the symptoms that you may be experiencing. It can also help your doctor determine if treatment is needed and what your likelihood of recovery is.

How is electromyography performed?

The EMG test has two parts - a nerve conduction study (NCS) and electromyography (EMG).

During the NCS portion of the test, electrical impulses are passed through the nerves to check their health. The NCS is sometimes performed by an EMG Technologist who specializes in this diagnostic test. It can also be performed by a physician certified as a CSCN Diplomate (EMG).

During the EMG portion of the test, a very fine acupuncture-like needle is inserted into muscles to see if there is any abnormal activity. Only a physician certified as a CSCN Diplomate (EMG) can perform the EMG portion of the test.

You can request to stop the testing at any time if you feel uncomfortable, but note that it will limit the doctor’s ability to diagnose the problem.

What is an EMG technologist?

An EMG Technologist is a specialized practitioner who may perform the nerve conduction studies. The technologist is trained in neuroanatomy and is able to localize specific muscles and nerves to perform diagnostic testing in order to assess the integrity of the neuromuscular system. A physician certified as a CSCN Diplomate (EMG) can also perform the nerve conduction studies.

When will I get the results of the test?

The test findings will be discussed with you at the end of your appointment. A consult note explaining the test results will be sent back to your referring doctor, usually within a week of testing.
