Visiting our clinic for the first time?

Here's what you can expect.

Preparation for the appointment

  • Complete the patient intake form which will be emailed to you prior to your appointment.
  • If you are unable to fill out the form at home or require assistance, please arrive 30 minutes early to your appointment to fill out the form at the clinic and we would be glad to assist.
  • Please email (hello@enablemedical.ca) or fax (604) 398-8285 any imaging and tests you may have completed prior to your appointment for the physician to review, such as MRI, CT Scans, X-Ray, EMG/NCS, etc.
  • Bring a current list of medications.
  • Wear or bring a loose fitting t-shirt or tank top to change into if you have issues with your neck, hands or arms.
  • Wear or bring a loose pair of shorts if you have issues with your back, legs or feet.
  • Stop using lotions or oils on your skin for a few days before your procedure as this can make the procedure more difficult to perform.
  • Prepare to stay at the clinic for up to 1.5 hours although it is most likely that the appointment will be completed sooner.

Appointment Confirmation Instructions

  • Our office will contact you 1 week prior to your appointment to confirm your attendance. If we are unable to reach you, your appointment will be cancelled and you will need to call back to reschedule your appointment to a future date.

Cancellation, Rescheduling & No Show Policy

  • Please provide a minimum of 3 days' notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment, otherwise a $250 rescheduling fee plus tax will apply.
  • A $250 rescheduling fee plus tax will also apply if you are more than 15 minutes late or if you do not show up to your appointment. We reserve a specified appointment slot for each patient; thank you for being considerate and respectful of our staff and patients' time.

English Language Learners

  • If you are an English Language Learner, please ensure that you are accompanied by a translator for your appointment. We reserve the right to reschedule your appointment subject to the $250 rescheduling fee if you arrive at your appointment without an adequate translator. Regretfully, our staff are only able to communicate in English and we need to ensure that we are able to fully understand your concerns in order to provide accurate and quality care.

Before the procedure

  • The doctor will explain the procedure to you and offer you the opportunity to ask any questions that you might have about the procedure.
  • The doctor will take a medical history from you - including asking you to describe the symptoms, the time course of the symptoms, and what you’ve done to try to manage the symptoms.
  • The doctor will complete a physical exam that includes a comprehensive neurological exam of the body part in question.

During the procedure

  • You will be asked to remove any clothing, jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses, hearing aids, or other metal objects that may interfere with the procedure. If you are asked to remove clothing, you will be given a gown to wear.
  • You will be asked to lie down for the test.
  • If your arms or legs are too cold, they may be warmed up prior to testing as cold temperatures will affect the test results.
  • There will be two parts to the electrodiagnostic exam, including a nerve conduction study (NCS) and the electromyography (EMG).
  • During the NCS, electrical signals will be sent down specific nerves to see if there are any abnormalities at the other end of the nerve.
  • During the EMG, a fine acupuncture-like needle is inserted into specific muscles to listen to their activity.
  • You can request to stop the testing at any time if you feel uncomfortable, but note that it will limit the doctor’s ability to diagnose the problem.

After the procedure

  • The test findings will be discussed with you at the end of your appointment. A consult note explaining the test results will be sent back to your referring doctor, usually within a week of testing.
  • In general, you will not need to come back to be tested again unless your symptoms persist or worsen. In that case, there may be value in performing a repeat test.
  • Muscle soreness may persist for a day or so following the procedure. Notify your doctor if you experience increasing pain, tenderness, swelling, or pus at the needle insertion sites.
