What is physical medicine & rehabilitation?

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to people with physical impairments or disabilities. This can include conditions such as spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, strokes, as well as pain or disability due to muscle, ligament or nerve damage.

Derek Thong
MD, FRCPC, 
CSCN Diplomate (EMG)

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Specialist, Medical Director

Dr. Thong is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) specializing in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He completed additional training in Electromyography (EMG) and is certified by the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiologists (CSCN). At Enable Medical, Dr. Thong provides direct patient care and oversees the clinic. He is passionate about improving the quality of life of his patients and enabling them to enjoy their day-to-day activities to the fullest.

Jason
RT (EMG), RET, BSc

Electromyography Technologist

Jason is dual registered in both Electromyography (RT EMG) and Electroencephalography (RET) from the Association of Electromyography Technologists of Canada (AETC) and the Canadian Board of Registration of Eletroencephalograph Technologists (CBRET) respectively. He completed his training in Electroneurophysiology at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in 2014 and has worked in various Neurology departments across the Lower Mainland ever since. With a passion for anatomy and problem solving, Jason looks forward to working with you to find the best treatment.

Medical Office Assistant

Angel is a motivated Medical Office Assistant who genuinely enjoys interacting with patients every day. She completed her MOA certificate at Douglas College and has since worked across a variety of different clinics throughout the Lower Mainland. Angel is committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment focusing on patient care. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family. She enjoys crocheting and has created a variety of cute crocheted animals.

Clinical Assistant

Ayesha enriches the team at Enable Medical with her knowledge and skill. She recently relocated to Canada with her husband from Pakistan where she obtained her medical degree and gained 4+ years of experience practicing medicine. She is eager to embark on her healthcare journey in this new environment, with aspirations of advancing her career as a physician in Canada. Ayesha finds comfort in Vancouver's cold and rainy climate. Beyond her professional pursuits, she thrives on engaging in conversations spanning various topics, from literature and cinema to psychology and spirituality.

Clinical Assistant

Hiba is a recent international medical graduate from Karachi, Pakistan. Her journey in healthcare has taken her through various different organizations around Pakistan and UK, and now Canada. She is committed to providing compassionate care to patients and contributing to a collaborative healthcare environment. Her passion for medicine and empathetic approach are well suited to her current work as she aspires to advance her career as a physician in her hometown. Growing up in Vancouver, she finds solace and inspiration in the mountains and beaches amidst the vibrant city. Outside of the medical realm she enjoys unwinding through yoga and a good book.

Anjanette is a highly skilled and versatile Medical Office Assistant with over 10 years of experience across a variety of healthcare settings. Throughout her career, she has worked alongside a range of doctors, gaining valuable insight into the unique needs of different medical practices. Her primary focus is always on delivering exceptional patient care, ensuring that patients not only receive the attention they need but also feel comfortable, informed, and supported throughout their experience at Enable Medical.

Outside of the office, Anjanette is an avid traveler who enjoys exploring sunny destinations around the world. Whether it's a tropical getaway or a cultural adventure, she embraces new experiences with enthusiasm. In addition to her love for travel, she is also a passionate foodie, always eager to try unique and diverse cuisines. Her adventurous spirit extends beyond the workplace, reflecting her curiosity and love for discovering new cultures and flavors.

Tiffany, MD

Clinical Assistant 

Tiffany is an international medical graduate from Taiwan, where she built a strong foundation in family medicine and developed a passion for public health advocacy. She has led medical and educational outreach programs across underserved communities in Southeast Asia and is now committed to serving her hometown of Vancouver, bringing a multicultural perspective and dedication to community health. Outside her professional journey, she recharges by hiking around Vancouver, running long distances, spinning, reading, and exploring new recipes in the kitchen.

Clinical Assistant 

Swathi Sampath is an international medical graduate (IMG) who graduated with a Bachelors in Medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Bahrain. For the past fourteen years she has been actively involved in healthcare in various capacities. Having undertaken her Canadian and American licensing examinations, she is eager to contribute to the community and explore a meaningful healthcare career that will utilize her skills and experience, help provide impactful, patient-centered holistic care and support BC’s evolving healthcare system. 

To relax and recharge, Swathi reads, bakes, and learns languages. Two years ago, Swathi and her husband adopted a 4 year old Husky-Samoyed rescue named Foggy and she keeps them on their toes every day.
