What is physical medicine & rehabilitation?

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to people with physical impairments or disabilities. This can include conditions such as spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, strokes, as well as pain or disability due to muscle, ligament or nerve damage.

Derek Thong
MD, FRCPC, 
CSCN Diplomate (EMG)

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Specialist, Medical Director

Dr. Thong is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) specializing in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He completed additional training in Electromyography (EMG) and is certified by the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiologists (CSCN). At Enable Medical, Dr. Thong provides direct patient care and oversees the clinic. He is passionate about improving the quality of life of his patients and enabling them to enjoy their day-to-day activities to the fullest.

Jason Lin
RT (EMG), RET, BSc

Electromyography Technologist

Jason is dual registered in both Electromyography (RT EMG) and Electroencephalography (RET) from the Association of Electromyography Technologists of Canada (AETC) and the Canadian Board of Registration of Eletroencephalograph Technologists (CBRET) respectively. He completed his training in Electroneurophysiology at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in 2014 and has worked in various Neurology departments across the Lower Mainland ever since. With a passion for anatomy and problem solving, Jason looks forward to working with you to find the best treatment.

Katrina Palazo, BSc

Medical Office Assistant

Katrina is a hard working professional from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Winnipeg. She brings more than 10 years of experience in customer service and over 5 of years experience as a Medical Office Assistant. She has also worked as a EKG/Spirometry Technician and in a lab. Katrina's varied experience brings a level of professionalism and kindness to Enable Medical. Her top priority is patient care and to provide an excellent patient experience when visiting Enable Medical.

Anna Rucelli Ignacio
MD, BSc (Kin)

Clinical Assistant

Anna is a registered kinesiologist and a medical doctor. With a bachelor's degree from UBC in Kinesiology and minors in Psychology, she has honed her skills as a registered kinesiologist, assisting clients in their recovery from various injuries, be it sports-related, work-related, vehicular accidents, or chronic diseases. Driven by her passion for health and wellness, Anna's journey led her to pursue a career in medicine in the Philippines, where she successfully completed her MD in 2020. Anna demonstrated exceptional dedication, managing her kinesiology work alongside her studies, qualifying exams, and rotations at various clinics. Now, Anna is on the verge of embarking on her residency journey, with a keen interest in exploring Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Beyond her professional pursuits, Anna finds joy in exploring trails, playing badminton, and indulging her creative side through baking. You may even catch her trying out the latest TikTok recipes or unwinding with a good movie.

Grace Lee, RET, BSc

Electromyography Technologist

Grace is a registered technologist in Electroencephalography (RET) from the Canadian Board of Registration of Electroencephalograph Technologists (CBRET) and a qualified non-registered technologist in Electromyography working towards getting fully licensed. She completed her training program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in 2022 and has been working in different hospitals and clinics in the greater Vancouver area as a neurodiagnostic technologist. She strives to improve every patient’s healthcare experience by providing professional patient-centred care.

Daisy Castellon

Medical Office Manager

Daisy brings 8 years of medical office experience and and uses her excellent communication and organization skills to make all things as seamless and easy as possible. She strives to make sure patients are well taken care of through her professionalism, calming disposition and compassionate nature. 

Alexis Llewellyn

Electromyography Technologist

Alexis is a certified electroencephalography technologist, duly recognized by the Canadian and American Boards of Registered Electroencephalograph Technologists. Additionally, she is on the cusp of obtaining full licensure as a qualified electromyography technologist. With an extensive background spanning approximately seven years in healthcare, Alexis exemplifies a steadfast commitment to patient-centered care. Outside of her professional endeavours, Alexis is an avid sports enthusiast, actively participating in both soccer and flag-football leagues during her leisure time.

Ayesha Hanif, MBBS

Clinical Assistant

Ayesha enriches the team at Enable Medical with her knowledge and skill. She recently relocated to Canada with her husband from Pakistan where she obtained her medical degree and gained 4+ years of experience practicing medicine. She is eager to embark on her healthcare journey in this new environment, with aspirations of advancing her career as a physician in Canada. Ayesha finds comfort in Vancouver's cold and rainy climate. Beyond her professional pursuits, she thrives on engaging in conversations spanning various topics, from literature and cinema to psychology and spirituality.

Zainab Elazab, MBBS

Clinical Assistant

Zainab brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the team at Enable Medical. As an International Medical Graduate, she completed medical school in Egypt and refined her skills through an emergency medicine residency program in Qatar. Her tenure as an independent emergency physician not only enriched her clinical acumen but also instilled in her a deep understanding of patient care. Outside of the medical realm, Zainab finds joy in exploring nature through hiking and nurturing her culinary creativity.

Ali Syed, MD

Medical Scribe

Ali brings a diverse array of experiences and expertise to the dynamic team at Enable Medical. As an International Medical Graduate hailing from Dominica, Ali's journey in healthcare has taken him through various medical facilities and organizations across the United States, where he honed his skills and knowledge. He also has a passion for innovative teaching and curriculum development, actively contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge and developing innovative ways to streamline the medical process. Beyond his professional pursuits, Ali finds joy in culinary exploration and embarking on enriching travel experiences, which fuel his adventurous spirit and zest for life.
