Why do my hands tingle or feel numb?

Many people experience hand numbness and tingling at night or during daily activites. Sometimes it feels like your fingers are "asleep" or you get a pins-and-needles sensation.

These symptoms can have several causes, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (pressure on the median nerve in the wrist)
  • Pinched nerves in the neck
  • Diabetes or circulation problems
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Repetitive strain or overuse

If you notice hand numbness and tingling that lasts more than a few days or keeps coming back, it is important to get a professional assessment.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common causes of hand numbness and tingling. It happens when the carpal tunnel inside your wrist swells and squeezes the median nerve. This can lead to pain, tingling, or weakness in your hand.

Common signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome

You may have carpal tunnel syndrome if you notice:

  • Numbness or tingling in your thumb, index, or middle fingers
  • Wrist or hand pain, especially at night
  • Weak grip or dropping objects
  • Symptoms that get worse when you bend your wrist

What causes carpal tunnel syndrome?

You are more at risk of carpal tunnel syndrome if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Repeatedly bend or use your wrist for work or hobbies (like typing or using vibrating tools)
  • Have arthritis or diabetes
  • Have a family history of carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Have injured your wrist in the past

How to treat and diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome?

If you think you may have CTS:

  • Avoid activities that make it worse
  • Wear a wrist brace, especially at night

If your hand numbness and tingling last more than a few weeks or are getting worse, you should have a proper assessment.

Nerve conduction testing for hand numbness and tingling

A nerve conduction study (EMG/NCS) is the most accurate way to confirm carpal tunnel syndrome and understand why your hands are tingling or numb.

At Enable Medical in Vancouver, BC, we specialize in EMG and nerve conduction studies to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve conditions. We have a short waitlist and can see patients quickly and efficiently.
